Unnecessary Health Screenings, Overtreatment Common in Older Adults
Overusing low-value health screenings and overtreating certain known or suspected health problems is a little-known issue in the American healthcare system, according to some recent research. This is especially true for older adults who may undergo unneeded testing – i.e., testing that has no solid evidence supporting its benefits – that results in complications.
Screening for prostate cancer in men 76 or older and testing for urinary tract infections in women 65 or older without symptoms were two examples cited in the study. Both instances can lead to overly aggressive treatments (radiation, surgery, antibiotics, etc.) that have harmful health effects without adding years to life.
A third example given in the study was the overtreatment of high blood sugar. Though allowing blood sugar levels to remain out of control is not a good option, current standard treatments using insulin or sulfonylureas can lead to dangerous low blood sugar events in older patients.
“We have taught patients to strive to control their blood sugar, even when it gets to a point when it’s safer to have slightly less controlled blood sugar,” said Dr. Stephen Persell, lead study author. “It’s hard to convince patients and doctors to change their goals.”
Saffron Fights Gut Inflammation, May Reduce IBD Symptoms
A saffron supplement may help lower inflammation associated with irritable bowel disease (IBD), a new study has found. The supplement also improved scores for patients with ulcerative colitis – a type of IBD – indicating an improvement in overall symptoms, including rectal bleeding and stool frequency.
Saffron is a spice derived from a specific type of crocus. It has been nicknamed “red gold” and used for several thousand years as both a culinary and medicinal spice. Saffron contains high levels of antioxidants, including carotenoids known as crocins, which likely are what gives it anti-inflammatory properties.
The study was a small one involving 30 adults with ulcerative colitis who were assigned to take a placebo, a 25 mg saffron supplement, or a 50 mg saffron supplement twice a day for 8 weeks. Those taking the higher-dose supplement experienced the greatest improvements in inflammation and ulcerative colitis scores, while the low-dose group had minor improvements.
Larger studies are still needed to confirm the potential benefits of saffron for ulcerative colitis and IBD, and it does have the downside of being considered the world's most expensive spice. However, researchers are also looking into other herbs/supplements for IBD like omega 3s, turmeric, vitamin D, and probiotics.

Vitamin D Your Body Can Actually Use
Statistics show that up to 41.6% of the American adult population is deficient in vitamin D – and that number jumps to 61% for older adults.
This is highly concerning because studies have linked vitamin D deficiency to serious health issues, including an increased risk of osteoporosis, falls, and bone fractures. For many, there's simply no easy way to get sufficient amounts of vitamin D, especially during the winter months when sunlight – the #1 source – is minimal. Even so-called fortified foods often contain only small quantities of vitamin D in an inferior, hard-to-absorb form.
Fortunately, a quality supplement can make up the difference, but many on the market contain poorly absorbed vitamin D (made from lanolin, aka "wool grease”) that is essentially a waste of money. Purality Health’s Liposomal Vitamin D3 with K2 is a game changer with a liquid formula that is plant-derived, ultra-pure, and designed to be fully absorbed by your body utilizing micelle liposomal technology. It's also third-party tested for quality assurance, delicious, and easy to take daily.

The 8 “Pillars” of Wellness + How to Excel in All of Them
One frequently used and comprehensive overview of wellness includes 8 interconnected dimensions of health: emotional, physical, intellectual, environmental, social, spiritual, financial, and occupational. According to this model, true well-being means focusing on each of these dimensions as needed. For example, better environmental health could mean cleaning your home and buying a few houseplants, while good occupational health involves finding meaningful activities inside and outside of work.(More)
Getting Regular Exercise Could Lower Your COVID Risk
Higher levels of physical activity are linked to a number of health benefits, and some recent research has found that getting regular exercise may also lower both the risk and severity of COVID-19. Specifically, study participants who met the current guidelines for weekly exercise were less likely to contract COVID or be hospitalized after getting COVID. Recommendations are currently set at 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.(More)
Protein-Rich Breakfast Boosts Satiety, May Improve Concentration
Eating a breakfast high in protein (as compared to one high in carbohydrates or no breakfast) can increase feelings of fullness and satisfaction, according to a recent study. Interestingly, the protein-rich breakfast also boosted concentration on a cognitive test for study participants. This could indicate that including a quality protein at breakfast is a good way to start your day, although the authors noted that it did not decrease overall energy intake, meaning a high-protein breakfast won't necessarily help with weight control. Acupuncture May Lower Stroke Risk in Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that heightens the risk of cardiovascular problems, including heart disease and stroke. A new observational study has now found that acupuncture might benefit rheumatoid arthritis patients, specifically by lowering the risk of ischemic stroke. Though more research is needed to confirm these findings, evidence suggests that acupuncture may work by lowering inflammation and calming the central nervous system. (More)
7 Common Toxins Hiding in Your Clothing
Though many people are now aware of toxins lurking in food and drinking water, clothing remains an overlooked source of numerous potentially harmful chemicals. Over 8,000 synthetic chemicals are commonly used in the textile industry, and some of the most notable mentions include phthalates, PFAS, heavy metals (particularly lead and chromium), chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, and synthetic dye chemicals – some of which may be carcinogenic. The human body contains trillions of blood cells divided into three different types. Red blood cells are the most numerous, created at a rate of about 2.4 million per second. Platelets make up the lowest percentage, but are extremely important due to their role in blood clotting.

Are You in the 50% with Vitamin D Insufficiency?
An estimated 50% of the global population is vitamin D insufficient with 35-42% of U.S. adults having an outright deficiency (and 61% of older adults).
This is bad news because being deficient in vitamin D is linked to serious health issues, including an increased risk of osteoporosis, falls, and bone fractures – and can send you into a “blue” mood. It's tough for most people to get enough vitamin D from food and sunlight alone (especially during the winter months), which is why a high-quality supplement can make all the difference. Purality Health’s Liposomal Vitamin D3 + K2 has a tasty liquid formula that allows for full absorption of this critical nutrient. It's third-party tested for quality, easy to take, and plant-derived – with vitamin K to support healthy bones.
